Right or Wrong; Incident between Lee Zii Jia and BAM


Malaysia national badminton player Lee Zii Jia submitted his resignation from the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) on January 11. After the discussion among the members in BAM, BAM has made a decision and announcement on Lee Zii Jia having a 2-year ban from joining any Badminton World Federation sanctioned tournaments starting from January 18 on January 21.  This incident involved Lee Zii Jia who is the rising star for Malaysia’s badminton career therefore it has gained lots of the public’s attention in this incident. But after Lee Zii Jia appealed for the decision made by BAM, both sides had a meeting and discussion on it and came out with the result that Lee Zii Jia will participate in the coming Asian Team Championships and BAM gave a blessing on Lee Zii Jia to become a free agent badminton player on January 25. 


Before the 25th January meeting between Lee Zii Jia and BAM, the incident between Lee Zii Jia and BAM about the 2-year ban has caused a heated discussion among the public and the netizens for the past week. There are lots of conflicts and criticisms on the decision made and there are also contempt piles on BAM from the netizens. Most people think that the decision made by BAM is problematic and retaliatory. They think that it is unfair for Lee Zii Jia to be banned from joining any international tournaments as the world ranking for badminton men’s singles of Lee Zii Jia will drop a lot. It also will lead to talent loss and negative impacts on the future development of the badminton industry. In this case, I do not deny it is a truth for bringing impacts for the future development of the industry. 


But is BAM's 2-year ban on Li Zii Jia a heinous wrong decision? 


In my opinion, neither BAM was wrong nor Lee Zii Jia was wrong in this situation. Lee Zii Jia looks for a better way for his own badminton career in the future based on his perception while BAM made this decision due to some considerations of their own. It might be due to the sponsorship consideration where the leave of Lee Zii Jia from BAM will affect the BAM’s sponsors where they will feel short-charged. This will lead to monetary cutbacks which affect the salaries of coaches, player allowances and operational costs. Furthermore, lots of money has been invested in Lee Zii Jia for almost 11 years since he was 13-year-old for his success. Both parties have their own perceptions, there is no right or wrong on any decision made. So, there is no necessity for quarrels on this incident as it does not bring any benefits.
